Artist 18: Jean Tinguely

Jean Tinguely was born in 1925 in Switzerland.  He was a painter and a sculptor.  His sculptures were kinetic pieces done in the Dada tradition known as metamechanics.  Made a satire of the mindless over production of material goods in advanced industrial society.  In 1952 TInguely moved to France to be able to pursue a career in art.  In the 1950’s he belonged to the Parisian avant-garde, he was also one of the artists who signed the New Realist’s manifesto in 1960.  The work he is best known for are his sculptures that self-destruct.  Tinguely’s piece, Homage to New York was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, this piece is one of his most famous pieces because it only partially self-destructed.
